Minju Yeo / A sense of place / Mon 12

My grandparents used to live in a city called "Janghang". It's a city right next to the sea. I have most of my childhood memory with my grandparents there. First of all, when I think of the city, I just can smell the salt of the sea water, and sound of the wave. I used to walk beside the beach with my parents and grandparents when I visit Janghang. Since I was a very small kid back then, I liked to play with the sand at the beach. I remember the softness of the sand and the shape of a castle I built by the sand. Also, what I remember the most of Janghang is an alley beside my grandparents' house. I used to play there with my cousins and my little sister. We played games like 'hide-and seek' or 'Mugunghwa is open (bloom)'. When I went back there after few years, I realized that the alley is really narrow. I wonder how we could play so joyfully although the space was so small. Finally, I remember very specifically of my grandparents' house. My grandparents had lived there more than twenty years. Therefore the house was very old, which made me curious, because I only lived in apartments since I was little. There were 'Jangdokdae' which is gathering of pots, and a garden which was full of vegetables and fruits. I remember secretly eating a pomegranate in the garden and it was so sour that I still can't easily eat pomegranate. After my grandfather passed away, grandmother sold the house and moved to Daejeon. However, I still have those memories from Janghang so well.

When I was in Ivory Coast (Africa), the place that I liked the most was a beach called Assinie. I always went there with my parents. It took about an hour and a half to get there by car. On the way to the beach, there were few cars and there were also fruits sellers along the street. If we keep going with the windows opened, we could hear those sellers who say to buy their fruits and we could smell the scent of well ripped mangoes. We stopped our car to buy those mangoes as the odor of the fruits fascinated us. When we were about to arrive on the beach, we could smell the sea and a sandy beach was spread out before our eyes. And it felt like I ate salty things when I was sniffing the air. We got out of our car, unpacked our bags under the parasols set on the sandy beach. And we had to be always careful to walk on the sand because there were pointed shells. But walking on the beach was better than worrying about the shells for the smooth and soft feeling. The sea was not like any other sea color but something like emerald color mixed with mud. It was not that pretty and I was a little disappointed about that. We could also see fishermen with small wooden boat on the sea. In addition, the beach was surrounded by beautiful palm trees and many cabins or traditional restaurants were located near it. The restaurants gave out fishy smell and peculiar African sauce. They were selling coconuts that they just picked up. We could taste very cool and fresh coconut after that the seller had cut off the coconut's shell. This place was so peaceful and my family and I could put aside worries and concerns every time we came.

I am typing this writing on the table in living room. The table is made of glass and wood and you can see the inside of it which is decorated with green and red artificial flowers. Right in front of me, there is TV. On the screen, a person measures the length of a woman's arm and the height of a boy with a narrow tapeline. I smell the scent of cleanser because I just washed my face. At this moment, I feel tingling on my left foot as I am leaning on the couch and my foot went numb. But it is getting better. Now I turned off the TV, because it distracts me on the writing. On the blank black screen, I can see myself. Eh... I don't want to show my face at this moment to anyone. And I hear the noise of the refrigerator from the silent kitchen.

A sense of place

Last winter vacation, I visited a pension and it is still vivid in my mind. Although it is at the side of the road, there aren't many cars because it is located in the mountain. When entering into the pension, I can see an extensive yard. There were many pots with diverse size, and snows were placed on it. And there are decending stone stairs in the edge of the yard that are connected to forest. It looks mysterious but I didn't go there because it was richly wooded and I felt scary. And I could see pension in the yard. It was korean style house made of red clay and had only the first floor. When I entered inside the pension, I can see a passage and there are two tables. They are made of wood and round shape. A computer was located on the one table, and there were dish on the another table. Because tangerine is on the dish, the pension was filled with the fragrance of tangerine. And inside the room, kitchen is next to the door. Bathroom is behind the kitchen, and there is a sliding door. When I open the sliding door, I can see a cozy room. The overall color of room was orange because floor of the room was made of red clay. Also since its wall was made of retinispora, I can smell its scant. In this room, I ate some tangerine which were in the passage, and it tasted really sweet and fresh. It was the most sweet tangerine I've ever eaten. And although it was winter and snowy outside, I couldn't feel any coldness because of red caly. The floor is so hot that I almost burned my hand. Although it was only a few months ago, I want to go this pension one more time if I visit Jeju island.

I, HUFS, Longest time

There is a place that I spend most of my time in HUFS, a HUFS library.  And there is one particular seat that I always sit. I think if you climb stairs in library to fourth story and push the transparent glass door to 1st Study Room you would probably see me sitting at the right corner. 1st Study Room is quite and warm place for me. This room can be divided into two parts, laptop room and open space for study. In laptop room temperature is little higher because this room is surrounded by glass walls.  There are only 16 seats in laptop room and plus, distance between seats is very narrow because it is quite a small room.  And each seat is isolated by small wooden walls installed in each seat.  Although this room is quite stuffy because of hot air and small spaces it is a good place to use your laptop. Every seat has 220V socket which is able to be plugged two electronic devices at once. In addition you can enjoy free wifie with five bars. If you look around open space for study you would probably notice lots of piled books on concrete line underneath windows. Since this space opens for around a clock people who study here almost every days just stack their books in the corner or in other spaces just for convenience despite possibilities of losing books. And it is quite wide place considering 268 people can study here at once. One of reasons that I like this space is that there is no isolated space unlike laptop room. Instead of isolated seat there are long rectangular tables so that twelve people can share by six people sitting each long side. As you just enter the door you will see ten long tables in left and wide passage way and eleven long tables in left. Distance between tables is enough while space between seats is little bit close so I prefer not to seat close to people because I carry lots of belongings such as laptop, paper dictionaries and so on. It is warm and usually clean plus there are always lots of people studying. This is why I like this place. I am always stimulated by seeing other peoples' studying hard.

Kahee Lee/ A sense of place

Today when I came back home tired after school, I went straight to my room to get some rest. When I opened the white wooden door to my room, the first thing I sensed was the cool scent of my perfume I use instead of air freshener. I saw my bookshelves, desk, dresser and wardrobe on the opposite side of the wall, all made of the same dark brown colored wood. On one side of the wall where my bookshelves were, I could see the novels and the small miniature souvenirs I lined up on each layer. I saw my puzzle boxes piled up above the bookshelves and my wardrobe which are located on each side of the wall, and wondered when I'll have the time to enjoy them. I looked down and I realized that my desk and dresser between the bookshelves and wardrobe were very messy. I had cosmetic products rolling around everywhere, since I forgot to tidy it up after before I did my makeup today. I cleaned the desk and accidently nudged the dolphin shaped mobile hanging on one of the drawers in the desk. It made a pretty jingling sound that made me feel peaceful and a bit drowsy. So I sat on my bed which was on the opposite side of my other furniture. My gray colored bedding with pink flower patterns were made of superfine fiber, so it was soft and warm, and made me even sleepier. I lied down and I looked at my frame right above my dresser filled with postcards and photo stickers. And then I looked at the wallpaper of my room which had clouds and colorful balloons drawn on it and thought it would be really nice if I could get away from this busy school life and go on a trip while I stared to doze off.

Heart of Suwon: Mountain Paldal & Market Jidong

I'd like to introduce "Mountain Paldal" and "Market Jidong". 'Mountain Paldal' is located in the middle of Suwon, Gyeonggi-do. 'Nam-san' in seoul and 'Mountain Paldal' are similar, because both of mountains are located in the middle of city. If you climb 'Mountain Paldal', you can see the entire city. Since there are long walking trails in the mountain, you can hike in the mountains along the walking path. There are a few mineral springs and a lot of exercise equipments and few monuments for '3.1 movement' and 'independence'. And also, in the spring, cherry blossoms are beginning to bloom. So you can smell cherry flavor. When you arrive at the top of the mountain you can see a 'Hwaseong' architecture that is called "Seo-jangdae"(West command post). Once it gets dark, you can see beautiful scenery of the city on the top of "Seo-jangdae". After go down a mountain, you can see "Market jidong" near the mountain. In the market, there are many of merchants and customers. So, it's very crowded and noisy in the market. And 'Market jidong' is famous for "Sundaeguk(Pork soup mixed with sliced sundae sausage)" that is very delicious. The soup of 'Sundaeguk' is very clear and there are a lot of meats in the 'Sundaeguk'. These two places are very famous place in suwon. I usually visit these places in the weekends with my family and I can feel very comfortable in these places.

Jeong Hyen Joo/ A sense of place/ Mon9-11

One of my favorite places is a restaurant which is called 'Ho Jup Mong'. As you can see from the name, this restaurant specializes in chinese cuisine. When you open the door, the first thing that you can see is a big chinese lamp which is hanging from the ceiling. It is a red and round lamp which brightens the room with a soft glow. It harmonizes with the overall interior decor. And when you see the wallpaper, you can easily imagine a fabric of red chinese dress which glitters with golden flowers and dragons. Also, when you see the floor, you can picture a night sky with the myriads of stars because it twinkles. There are only 6 tables because it is a small restaurant, and each table has 4 chairs. These tables are small, black, rectangular, and those are decorated with a beautiful flower pattern. Also, the chairs have a same color and pattern of the table. Because this chair is a hard tree stool, it is so uncomfortable when you sit on it. At the right side of the restaurant, there are some chinese ceramic dolls and bottles by the window. While I sit by the window and wait for the food, I can hear the music which is a chinese song. The last thing that I heard was a song named 'Chum Mil Mil'. Also, while I listen to the music, I can smell the delicious chinese food which has a racy flavor. It smells sweet, salty and spicy. At the entrance of the restaurant, there is a counter with a staff who is wearing a chinese dress as a uniform. So, when I come to this restaurant, I can feel that I'm in China even though I've never been there. I've always come to this place when I want to eat delicious chinese food, and visit the China without boarding on a plane.

Minju Yeo/ A posession that is important to me / Mon 1,2

A special possession for me is a song that I made with my friends in a school club. I don't know if I could call this a possession, but it has a special meaning to me. There was a competition in HUFS that gives prizes for making a good song. My club, which is a singing club, decided to participate together. At first, it sound really cool and seemed easy to make a song. However, there were so many difficulties than we expected. First, many skills and talent than we thought were required to make a song. Starting from making a chorus, and to chord, we had to spend all a month to finally make our song 'sound like a song'. Second, since we had so many problems to discuss and decide, we often had to fight each other. The fights even made some people to withdraw the club. Me and my boyfriend who was in the same club fought everyday which made our relationship not so good. As time went on, we agreed that we needed some time to make each other understood and be friendly again. We did this by communicating a lot. After our club got through all those hardships, we finally completed our own song named 'I hope my heart gets to you'. The song indicated our thoughts. The reason this song is a special possession for me not only because it is a piece of memory and unique, but also it gave me a lot of lessons of communicating with friends or a boyfriend.

Youn Hee KIM/ A possession that is important to me

What's important to me is my Polaroid camera. Because it was the first time that I saved money to buy something, so this camera is really meaningful and important to me. At the first time, I wanted to buy a digital camera. But one day, there was a Polaroid ad on TV and Song Joong-Gi(a Korean actor) appeared in that commercial ad. Actually, I watched it because I liked the actor. And then, it was the time that I started to have interests on the Polaroid camera. Also, it was when I was attracted by its functions. So, I decided to buy a Polaroid camera than to buy a digital one. The camera that I bought is made of plastic and it's brown. There were a white one and a pink one but the brown one caught my eyes. I don't know but when I saw the brown color, I felt a warm impression. It's a little big to take it with me but it's not a problem because it's not so heavy. It costs a lot to buy the film. However, I don't have to spend much money buying the film because I use the camera only when I want to keep a special moment. And I love the sound when the photo is coming out. It makes me expecting and I can't wait to look at it. I like that I can feel and touch the memories I had when I take pictures with it. And I also like to think that maybe the photo that I take will be a one and only picture that I can share with my friends or family. It has a different feeling to the pictures in my mobile phone. I think that I won't show a strong attachment to any other Polaroid camera than mine, so I will cherish it all the time that I could take photos even when I will get older.

Something that is more worth than my soul

I am looking at the night skies thinking what is the most important among what I have.  Maybe it could be my laptop which is the most expensive one, or my gorgeous leather shoes, or maybe rolling papers from my high school friends and so on. But I think these can be duplicated or simply I can buy another one. However, there is one thing that cannot be replaced by anything, 'my family'. I have spent the longest time with 'my family' since my birth, and I have priceless memories with them more than anything, and their value is immeasurable. How can't I choose 'my family' to be the most important possession? I can sacrifice myself for 'my family' even the sacrifice leads to my death. The word 'my family' means fifteen people including me which are composed of five small families. These families are all rooted from my grandparents. Originally, my grandparents had two sons and two daughters. And eventually, it became fifteen people. Although five small families are all living in different places for instance Seoul, Sangju city, Pohang city and Gimcheon city but all the members are really tightly connected. All families are gathered four times in every year in New Year's Day in the lunar calendar, Chuseok, my grandfather's memorial ceremony and my grandmother's birthday in my grandparents' house in Gimcheon city. Actually 'my family' was seventeen people not fifteen. Yes, there were two people who are already passed away. Regarding 'my family' I feel that I share my soul maturing with them. I can see uncles and aunts getting older and childrens becoming adult. In the range of 'my family' I learned life, death and many other things. Saying again 'my family' is all that I have.

Some coins from Philippines.

I have some coins and it always stay in roaster shaped plate. Those came from Philippines about three years ago. Sometimes I look at them and think about memory of Philippines. When I was 18 years old, I went to Philippines to volunteer. It was my first overseas trip. So I was really excited about it and I expected something about Philippines for example, nice people, beautiful weather and sweet fruits. I knew that trip for volunteer but program had tour course so I expected these things. When I went to Philippines street I was shocked. I was in the car with opened windows, and many poor kids came to us and told us "Give me one dollar." It was really shocked to me because I never expected such that things. But it was just beginning. When I arrived at the promised place, the situation there was worse. I taught them basic level origami. It was shocking to them (kids and even adults) because they couldn't get any education. For them I was kind of rock star. One of girl came to me and she said "I want to contact with you. Please give me your address." So I said "My address is complicated to you so let me give you my e-mail address." And then she said "What is e-mail?" She didn't know e-mail, internet and computer even though telephone! I was shocked and I couldn't say anything. But I don't want to let her depressed, so I gave her my address. Then she gave me some coins. It was less money even I couldn't exchange for Korean money. The last day in Philippines I shopped, and I saw unusual roaster shaped plate so I bought it. Until today I keep coins in roaster shaped plate. It's meaningful and touching for me. Sometime I saw them and think about poor kids in Philippines.

I have an old and small sweater that has very special value to me, because it is related to my childhood memory. When I was young, I lived with my grandmother because my mom and dad were both working out until late. So my grandmother took care of me and she was even closer to me than my parents. But as the time passes and my mother stopped working outside, so I had to move back to my original house. Since my whole childhood memory is related to my grandmother, I was so depressed that I had to leave her. So for me, as a farewell present, my grandmother made me this sweater. This sweater is a bright red one, which was my favorite color and it was woven by my grandmother. As she is really good at making things, it is elaborately woven. Though now, it doesn't fit me at all and it is quite ragged, it still reminds me of the sweet love of my grandmother, so when I looking at it, it feels really warm and comfortable. This red sweater is my most valuable possession to me and I will keep it forever.

People usually take their important stuff with them. I also take it wherever I go. For me, that important stuff is my cellular phone. The cell phone means more special to me because of the promise that I made with my mom. I promised my mom not to use my cell phone for 2 years when I was in high school. So I know the difficulty of living without cell phone. I could contact to them only when I was 'with' them, I couldn't call nor text to them. For a girl who wanted to chat with her friend, it was harsh. Like most people, to me, cell phone is important for entertaining reason. On my way to school, I always take subway. In the subway, the only thing I can do is standing in the crowd. I can't read a book while I am standing on the shaking train. Therefore, browsing the Internet with my phone became the thing that amuses me on my way to school. In other situations, like waiting for someone, the entertaining function can be the worthwhile time-killer. Cell phone can be a crown as well as contacting device to me.

Min Kyong Sohn,"The most important possession",Mon 1,2

"What of my possession is the most important one to me?" I posted this question on my Facebook using my cell. And there were some funny answers like; "yourself!" or like "write about me!" Then suddenly this idea struck my head, 'What would it be like to live without cell phone?' Just thinking about it, it made me feel like I'm sitting in the dark. I'm not saying it because I'm addicted to it or my cell is very fancy one like i-phone-and it is not. It's just a white android phone that can be seen anywhere-. I'm saying so because it takes a big role in my life these days. I wake up as my alarm go off sharp in the morning. And then I check my schedule of the day, because most time I memo my homework or important things on my cell. It helps me to keep my life on track. I also check up on my friends through Facebook or messaging application. I look up on the internet to see interesting news. I don't' spend most of my time using my cell but it still plays a big role in my life. I think I will be so distracted and lose if I don't have it. So, I choose my cell as the most important stuff I possess.

MP3 player: Valuable enough to make me smile

Do you have a possession which makes you smile? For me, that is MP3 player. When I was 13 years old, my parents gave me a gift box for elementary school graduate. After opening it, I could see an MP3 player. I was more happy and amazed to be given it because it was my first MP3 player. It was small-about 1/4 of my palm and light so I could bring it putting it in pocket or holding it in my hands. And for that its color was white with blue outlines, I felt neat and fresh. But as it was easy to be dirty because of its light color, I usually used a cover on it. Also it had a silver colored stick used to operate the machine. I felt as if I were playing a console game when I used the stick. Its screen was very small and black and white. Although I couldn't see colorful videos, I don't change it until it was broken in last year. The reason is "memory" and "comfort"- I can remember the days when I was given it and using it, and also feel comfortable because of being accustomed to the MP3 player. Although now I can't use it, I will cherish this special possession.

The memory of London

I have a bracelet which is really special for me because it reminds me a memory of the trip to London. During summer vacation last year, I decided to take a trip to Europe by myself. Starting my trip, I first visited London and stayed in a hostel near the King's Cross station. It was there that I met a lady from New Zealand who had been staying there looking for her new job and a place to stay. Since our beds were side by side, we had a lot of chances to talk to each other, and she kindly helped me set up my travel route. During the days in London, she had me visit some gorgeous restaurants and cafes as well as tourist attractions that I really loved. Though we couldn't spend a long time together, we got very close, and she seemed so sad when I told her that I should leave. Before I departed for Paris, she set me off at the station and handed a little box to me. There was a beautiful bracelet inside the box. It was made of silver and three flowers were decorated with a little baby angel adornment. It weighed a little more than I expected, but in my wrist, it seemed wonderfully charming because it shined when it was exposed to sunshine. The baby angel was dangling every time I moved, so that it made me feel cheerful enough. She said that the bracelet would keep me safe for the whole traveling period, and thanks to that, I guess I could really escape all the dangers. Although I cannot make a connection to her now, in Korea, anymore, I can still think of her and remind our warm memory when I see the bracelet lying in my jewel box.

My special possession

I have a butterfly-shaped necklace that I always cherish. I keep it in a wooden treasure box in my closet, and wear it only on special occasions. I feel my heart get warm when I stare at it because it reminds of my dear boyfriend. He gave me the necklace when we had the 4th date. As he said, he bought it in a duty free shop when he visited Japan 2 years ago. At first, He had no intention to buy it, but as it captured his mind so strongly that he just managed to purchase it, imagining how beautiful it would be if his future girlfriend wear it. The jewelry is butterfly-shaped and one third sized of the little finger. It is light pink colored but semitransparent that I can see through it. Originally, it has a brown leather string which can be replaceable with a silver one, so I have to lash it tight not to drop from my neck. What makes it more beautiful is a tiny white cubic in the middle of the jewelry. With it, it shines bright whenever I move myself. I thank him for giving me this necklace not merely because of its beauty, but its meaning to himself. He waited for 2 years long to give it to a suitable person. I am so pleased to be the one. I will never forget his trust on me, and also love him with my all affection.

I have a small treasure, hidden deep inside my drawer. But it's not something that is really valuable and expensive, it's a small heart shaped locket painted in gold. The locket is a bit bigger than 500 Korean won coin, and had a flower carved on the surface. Inside the locket there was a mirror and a place to put in a tiny picture. I got this as a gift from two of my friends, who were sisters, as a pledge of friendship. I met these girls when I moved to Busan in elementary school. Our fathers had the same profession, and we lived in the same apartment, and we had similar hobbies. Because we had a lot in common, we were soon very close. But both my family and their family had to move to different cities after a year. Before I moved away, they gave me this locket so I wouldn't forget them. We put in a small memo inside, which had our names written on it. The locket also had a gold chain so I used to wear it wherever I went. However, the chain snapped and it disappeared. My friends and I still keep in touch once in a while. We are close as we always were, although we haven't seen each other for years. Every month or so when I clean my desk drawers, I open the box I kept the locket and our letters in and look at it for hours. The locket is soaked with my memories of me and my friends. That's why I treasure this locket. I am treasuring my beautiful memories.

Portable Multimedia Player: Memory of my high school

I have a PMP that is special for me. When I look at my PMP, then I can remember my high school life. When I was a freshman in high school, my parents bought and gave it to me. I got a "T43" I-station PMP. It was a black and has silver line. There are 3 to 4 inches screen in the center of the PMP, and it has some buttons on the right side. In the back side, it has a battery. Both sides of PMP are equipped with USB ports for PC and charging. During my high school life, I was used to using my PMP for my study and I also using it for watching dramas or movies. I use my PMP very carefully and after my high school graduation, I gave it to my younger brother. When my parents gave it to me, I was happy because it was new model in that time, and I can use PMP in many ways. And now, my brother will use my PMP for his study. My younger brother will use my PMP and he will take very good care of my PMP. Because he'll use it during his school life and he really need it to his study.

Not special sometimes really special.

Actually, I almost cherish all the things around me. But especially, I love my clothings although They are small in number and I don't know why. And among those clothings, I most cherish my dress shirt that I made. During winter vacation, I studied fashion illustrating in FIK and it was really good. There, I learned drawing and also sewing. So I designed and make pattern basd on what I learned. There is no special details or decorations, it is just as typical as we usually wear with 7 buttons in the middle. However, What's different is that it is made only for me! To make it, I measured my body and also got all the matrials(textile, buttons..) on my own. Finally, I got a beige colored dress shirt which is really plain but special for me! Because It was my work in my life, I might feel more like that. Looking that shirt, the 2 months of memory pass by and also make myself more passionate for fashion. In the near future when I become famous in Fashion fields, I hope to speech, someday, in front of hundreds of millions of people ,with this shirt on!

"Wow, your coat looks nice!", "The coat suits you well, Mi Jung."

I hear these comments from my friends whenever I wear the pink trench coat. Then I proudly and happily reply, "This is the coat my mom bought me as my 20th birthday present."

I have this awesome pink trench coat that my mom bought me for my 20th birthday, last year. The color is classy soft pink which is uneasy to find. Also, the style of the coat is very unique.  The coat suits me well, too. Despite the style of the coat, I have another reason for cherishing the coat. It's very meaningful.

Whenever i wear the coat, it recalls my memory of last year's birthday party that I held with all my family members. Being 20 in Korea means more than just growing up. You start a new life as an official adult. It may mean that you get more freedom in some way, but at the same time, it also may mean that you have more responsibilities to take for your life and the world around you. When my mom bought the trench coat for me, she wrote this short message that I would never forget throughout my life. 'Mi Jung, I want your 20s life to be joyful. I know that you have passion and enthusiasm to fulfill your dream. I know that you can do it. This is my present for your new beginning. Become a more independent, enthusiastic person, I will always support you. Love you, always.'

I often wear the coat and sometimes feel like 20, getting the feeling of refreshment. I also feel the love of my mom and resolve once again to become a better person. During the semester, I live in my aunt's house and don't get to see mom often. The coat seems to shine more with my mom's love who always supports me no matter what condition I am in. Not only the coat is in unique style but also it recalls my happy, warm memories of my 20th birthday. That's why the pink trench coat is the most important possesion to me.

One of the things I cherish the most is my field jacket. It is khaki, has two pockets and no hoods. It looks just common jacket which is good to wear in the spring and fall, but it has a special meaning to me. My sister gave it to me as my 18th birthday present. She was 16 years old at that time and just a middle school student. She didn't make any money and wasn't even old enough to do so. However, she collected her pocket money from parents to prepare for my gift. Actually, I couldn't have many chances to talk to her during my high school days for I had to stay in the dorm. Not just talking, even seeing each other's face was permitted, if many, once or twice a month. During those busy days, however, she bought the jacket on my birthday and I was so impressed. The present was not sent to me on the exact day because I was in school. But when I received it in the weekends, though it was not an expensive or brand clothes, I could feel her care for me and love for family. It is now worn and faded a lot, but still, I sometimes put it on. Whenever I wear my jacket, it gives me power to live enthusiastically and emotions that my family is with me though we are far apart.

I have a special clothing that is very special to me. It is a Korean traditional cloth called HanBok. It is seperated into three parts--there is a inner white dress and two outers. Upper part of the outer is called 'JeoGoRi'. Mine is the color of coral pink and some beautiful lines with flowers are trimmed on the sleeves. The dark purple outer dress is very long and smooth. It is made out of a piece of silk so it shines gently under the light. When I was 16 years old, I got my HanBok from a traditional cloth market with my parents. I wear this special cloth in many occasions to celebrate something. For instance, I wore it for my grandparents' birthday parties and for the wedding ceremonies of my cousins'. Therefore whenever I wear my HanBok, I recall all of those good memories I had with it. This makes my special cloth even more special to me!

A possesion that is the most important to me

I have a beautiful ring on my left hand which always keeps me happy, and this is a possession that I consider the most important. Because it is from my father, it is too special for me. My hometown is far away from Seoul. So, I have visited my hometown, Hongsung, from Seoul. At the beginning of 2011, When I visited home for the first time after leaving there, my father led me in a jewelry shop and bought me this silver ring. I was so impressed by his love. I always keep it in my hand until now, this moment. Then, let me explain the shape. As you can see above, it is a silver one, and it is decorated by round shape and oval shape. The round and oval shapes are connected one by one on the ring and there are cubics on each shape. The cubics on it are shining. I am very proud of it. However, because I wear it all the time, it is little bit worn out. That is, little bit scratched. I wear it on my forefinger of left hand, because it is too large for other fingers. Thanks to this, whenever I am, whatever I do, I feel comfortable. That is, It beyonds the most important thing. It is also my guardian which keeps me from feeling melancholy caused by living far away from family.

My Fovourite Matryoshka Doll.

Since I am a big spender, after some visits to Russia, I naturally became a Russian souvenir collector. Especially, I like Matryoshka dolls, the Russian traditional wooden dolls, so I have brought home five of them. Out of these dolls, my favorite is the red Matryoshka that I have bought in Moscow on my first visit. It has ten figures in it; the outermost figure is about fifteen centimeters tall, and the last figure – five millimeters. The outermost doll is a plump Russian girl dressed in a red floral-patterned Sarafan, the Russian folk costume. She is wearing a golden hair decoration and holding a white lace handkerchief in her right hand. All the ten figures are in the same clothes and with the same accessories, but with different facial expressions. The biggest girl seems happy; a gentle smile curves her lips. However, when you open this first figure, you will see what the handkerchief is for: the next doll inside is shedding tears. There are five sad girls in five happy girls, or vice versa. It is strange that, unlike the usual Matryoshka dolls, not the all girls seem happy in this one. On the other hand, it totally makes sense; because it shows the fact that there are both happy days and sad days in our lives. Also, it is true that there is sadness beneath the happiness and vice versa. Whenever I feel down, I bring this Matryoshka doll down from the cabinet and open all the pieces. Considering the repeating order of smiling and crying, the last tiniest girl must be crying, but I cannot see it exactly, because it is too small. And then, I feel that my sadness seems as small as that of hers, and try to smile. What a good doll it is!

I have a very special hood T in my room-closet. It's overly white colored and has a "Smurf" character in the middle.

Its sleeves are worn out, and the color of the clothes is faded.

In addition, it doesn't fit me anymore because it has been stretched after several times of bad laundries. However, still the hood-T is one of my most cherished clothes. Then why is this cloth so important to me?

I have to reel the clock needle backward, and tell you about myself a little bit, before I give you the real story of the hood-T. To tell you the truth, I have some problem in maintain long-lasting relationship with my boyfriends. The longest time I've ever dated was approximately 3 months. Because I dedicate myself a lot when I date, it left me nothing but a torn heart after I broke up. Also I never had a chance to celebrate 100 anniversaries, since I always split apart right before the days of those events. After the same, repeated dating pattern going over and over again, I was exhausted with meaningless dating. So I declared never to get involved in a serious relationship until I graduate the university. However, my current boyfriend totally turned my view on dating. My skeptical thoughts on dating were able to fade away, due to the efforts that my boyfriend has taken.

The hood-T is the 100 anniversary gift that I received from my boyfriend as a present. It's really meaningful not only because it represent that I had a long-relationship for more than 100 days, but also it was my first anniversary gift I've ever gotten in my life. Now our couple has been dating for almost a year, and during the time my boyfriend bought me many other clothes because the hood-T he gave has ragged. However, I will still keep this hood-T as my favorite cloth because it reminds me of the memorable time I spent with my boyfriend.

I will never trade this shirt with anything else.

This hood-T will last for a lifetime!

I am so-called shoeaholic. And there is one pair of shoes with special meaning to me. Usually when I go to travel, I always buy the countries’ traditional shoes. One of my favorite shoes is the one from Spain. Because I found them, taking lots of challenges. When I went to Spain, I met a girl wearing them. They are totally my style; they looked so confortable and could be matched in any clothes well. So I asked her where she got them. As soon as I found the way to the store, I changed my schedule in Spain and headed there. On the way to the store, I got lost. Just before I got desperate and mad at, I faced a special parade that holds once a year in Spain. The parade was coming with 15-feet puppet show and it was so rare opportunity for tourist to watch the parade by chance. Just after the parade, I finally found the store. It was not that far from where I departed. And I bought them. They  look like home wear-shoes which is 실내화 in Korean. They have flat sole and made of natural material such as organic cotton, non-artificial figment and so on. Naturally they are hand-made by old craft Spanish men. Come back to Korea, whenever I wear the shoes, they remind me of the moment in Spain; It was hot, I was exhausted, the parade was fantastic, and the moment I creamed when I found the store. I cherish both the moment and the shoes.

My most cherished possession is a doll that my mother gave to me when I was four years old. She made it for me because of my birthday present. She wanted to give something special that I would never forget. So, she decided to make a doll to give me the best friend that I've ever had. My doll is a girl who has a long brown hair which is made of wool. And she has beautiful eyes with green buttons. Her nose and mouth were drawn by me, and I made her smile. Actually, her skin is yellow because there wasn't enough flesh-colored fabric in my house. So, it looks like one of the characters in 'The Simpsons'. Also, it smells good because it is stuffed with coffee beans. And she is wearing a long, flowing pink dress in feminine flower-prints. In fact, that's something that I worn when I was a baby. I have always slept with that doll until I grow up. I feel happy and safe with her, and it makes me so comfortable when I smell it. It is a connection between me and my childhood. It is a very important thing to my life, and I will keep it in my treasure box until my life ends.

I have a very special t-shirt. It is blue and has a round neckline. Because it is made out of cotton, it is very soft and comfortable. This t-shirt is designed by my sister and I. It was January 2011 that I got this t-shirt. My sister lives in the U.S, so it is difficult to see her and be together. So my sister and I went to the t-shirt designing shop to make a t-shirt that would remind us of each other. At the shop, we picked out the color and style of the t-shirt we want. Then we chose the font and the color of the letters that were going to be printed on. On the left top of the front, we wrote 'sisters' and on the back, we wrote our last name 'Eun' in capital letters. The letters are yellow and it looks really cute. Whenever I wear this shrit, it reminds me of my sister and the times we had together. This t-shirt means a lot to me and I am planning to keep it for a long time.

TV: could you live without it?

When I was a child, there wasn't a day that TV was turned off at home. My parents, especially my father, were a huge fan of movies, so my family watched TV almost every night. Sharing a soft blanket with my father, I stared at the screen no matter they were understandable for my short knowledge. Between TV ads, my mother quickly prepared a knife and apples from kitchen, so we were able to continue enjoying movies while taking a bite of them. For sure, TV was a kind of medium that let my family join together. Those old memories are so warm and cozy that they take quite a big part of my mind. As times goes by, my sisters and I get older, and that leaves us only little time to gather in front of TV. Now, when TV shows me horrible scenes, I don't throw myself into my father's arms any more. When it shows sad movies, I rarely whimper beside of my mother. Nevertheless, we still occasionally converge on the living room, and watch TV together. While watching it, we not only enjoy the program, but also share some daily conversations. My mother still peels apples for the rest of my family. Some people might argue that TV is strongly addictive and has full of harmful things. Others might insist that it offers informative materials as well as entertaining contents. However, whether it is helpful or not in the light of education or for a break, I believe TV plays an important role for many families like us. If we don't have TV in our hectic lives, we would have much less family gatherings. We might not have a difficulty living without it for the help of other functional devices. However, we would also lose an opportunity to have happy times with family.

Min Kyong Sohn,Mon 1-2, "TV"

I remember that when I was very young I was crying because I missed my favorite cartoon on TV. Maybe that time, since watching TV was one of the most entertaining things I did, I would've said "No! I CAN NOT live without the TV!" Now, I say otherwise. Back then, watching TV was so much fun and there were not many things that were entertaining to me. But now, I have other interests, I have less free time, and I find it quite time-wasting sitting and playing couch potato. So, I rarely watch TV. And also, years ago there was very limited ways of gaining information, such as newspapers or news broadcastings. So people had to rely on these methods to get informed about international, social, economic, or even about local issues. There was no way to find out about these things unless you watch news every evening. Nowadays people have smart phones, we can check up on the latest incidents every minute, search for information we need and also check out if new e-mail has arrived or not. TV provided most of these functions itself, but now, other alternatives have replaced it.

SON NA RAE / LIFE WITHOUT TV

Life without TV

There are two ways of experience: in a direct way and in an indirect way. The best tool for the latter is TV. Through watching TV, people can get plenty of information and knowledge. In my case, I love being exotic: learning foreign languages, cooking other countries' traditional food, and so on. But if I want to know more about my interest, the limitation challenged me. I can't visit every single country only for the reason I want to know and experience. I can't afford the fare and time. This is why I enjoy watching TV. It lets me get much educational or interesting information about various countries. If a person asks me "can you live without TV?" then I would ask back to the person. "can you learn without teacher?"

TV: Could you ie without it?

Nowadays it is very common to have television in one's house. Statistics show that almost everyone has at least one TV for a house in South Korea. However, I am not the one who cnnot live without this piece of inention. Spending more than two hours of watching television was not allowed for me when I was young, and I did not watch it during my high school period, either. Some people say that it is essential to have TV, or at least to watch it to follow up with the current world. They also argue that TV has many well-made programmes such as EBS lectures and many docomentaries. But there are so many other ways to subsitute TV. For example, one can read books or use Internet to get information, and he or she can read newspapers to keep in touch with current events. Moreover, the negative sides of TV--uprising violence throughout the teenagers or the lack of communication between family members, outweigh the positive sides. And that is why I believe it is able to live without TV. I, myself, is living without it right now, am having no difficulties to live a normal life at all, even better!

Since I was very young, TV occupied most of my free time. From the soap operas I watched in the late night, and gag shows which beat my boring weekends, to documentaries which allowed me to cover all kinds of stories, watching TV was the best way to kill my spare time. At that time I could not find anything which could replace TV. Of course, I could watch TV through Internet or other resources, but I was too young to utilize them. That led me to giving up another channel while I was watching the other, and waiting until the program reran once I missed it. So I had to sit down before TV every week, at same time. Being a high school student, however, I didn't have enough time to watch TV. Nevertheless, I downloaded some programs through Internet. Then, I was old enough to use the 'Internet' thing. At that time, I realized that using Internet means being able to watch what you want to watch while watching TV means having to watch what the broadcasting station plays on that time. Thanks to this convenience, I started to use computer to watch TV and my time spent on watching TV has decreased a lot. Now, I'm living in the Globeedorm, where there is no TV. But I don't have any inconvenience so far. My leisure time has been replaced by reading books or writing something. Sometimes when I can't concentrate on what I should be doing, I turn on my computer and download some interesting programs. Also, I can watch famous shows whenever I want to. In conclusion, I can live without TV because there are many other things which can substitute for it with more convenience.

Although I watch TV sometimes and quite enjoy watching it, still I think I can live without TV. First, I'm not a big fan of TV so far. Though few TV programs are very entertaining and I like watching them, I have never stopped doing something because of the TV program or for watching TV. Until now, rather than watching TV, I spend most of my free time spending with my friends or family talking or hanging around. The TV program you really enjoyed has been erased within a few weeks, but the memories spend with your beloved people cannot be forgotten. Also, even though there's no TV you can still watch TV programs you like through new other devices such as computer or smart phones. They are more convenient than TV, since I don't have to fit in my time in TV organization chart. Furthermore, unlike the past, there are many things that I can do instead of watching TV, the movies, concerts or plays are everywhere and they are easy to access. For these reasons, I can live without TV without any other discomfort. There are so many things you can do in your life and isn't it too sad if you just spending time watching TV?

TV : Can you live without it?

"Did you see yesterday's TV show?", "I missed Haepumdal last week!"

This is an ordinary conversation that can easily be found among friends. Some people say that television is an old medium today. I believe, eventhough TV is considered an old medium, it still plays an important role in my life style. I find it sad to hear some people forget how much influential TV is to their life, also fail to notice that a lot of contents internet provide them are from TV. Internet or other new media show more individual characteristics and it's hard to watch together with others in the spare time.

I love to watch TV in weekend with my family members. TV provides us topics to make a conversation with- from entertainment issues to social issues that are hot potatoes in today's world-. It's not desirable to make conversations only based on TV programmes however I think TV provides the laughter that all the family members can enjoy along. This is the same among friends as well. We talk about TV programmes and sometimes debate on some issues from TV shows. This is quite productive.

For me, TV is the most trustworthy medium to acquire certain figure's opinions or other social issues. Internet can provide me with some important issues, however, because people are more free to express themselves through internet, informations are sometimes wrong. I say it's my ability to find out which is wrong and which is not. Anyways I find it more comfortable to learn about social problems via TV programmes.

As a student majoring in Journalism and Mass Communication, I find it interesting to learn about TV and the history of how it had developed. I know how sometimes TV can be harmful when misused. However, I find TV programmes fun, interesting and sometimes productive. It's like the oasis in my dry life. They give me laughter and also issues to think about in depth. Therefore I say, I cannot live without TV!

Turn Off TV, Turn On Life

The Koreans are watching TV on average three 3 hours per day, 90 days per year, 10 years in a lifetime. TV is always with us. Most families put a TV in the living room. In some cases, there is a TV in their room. They are even watching TV in the subway or bus by using the DMB function that is built in their smart phone. People say that why they're watching TV is to get rid of stress and to rest after their tough life. But is that real? Of course if they're really need to watch TV and they choose the program on their own, that's ok. But, Most of the people are "Just" watching TV. These acts are very passive. They're idly watching TV because they're nothing to do or killing their own time. Without their choice, living passively makes us depressive. There are two things that TV's harmfulness. First, if we're watching TV regularly we lose our own time. Instead watching TV, we can talk together with our family eating some fruits and we can read our favorite books or we also can listen to music. Watching TV is just addictions that like drug or gambling. Second, TV is very harmful to our physical and psychological health. Electromagnetic wave of TV is harmful to human health, and TV is more aggressive and provocative than other media. Especially, teenagers can be adversely affected. Do you know "No TV" movement? It's world-wide movement with NGOs. It's not familiar at first. But if you turn off TV, you can get back your life. This sentence: "Turn off TV, Turn on Life" is a slogan of "No TV" movement. Please, remember this slogan and we also participate in this movement. It's time to rescue our real life.

TV: Could you live without it?

Before answering the question I feel like making a clear definition about what the TV is really essential. Usually people associate the word TV with only TV set. This tendency suggest that some may think that TV is not so important when it is compared to past. Because smart phone, laptop, iPad and many other devices are able to replace TV set. Even some people value these items more than a TV set. However, the correct definition of television is a telecommunication medium for transmitting and receiving moving images that can be  colored or not  with or without accompanying sound. It means that the term TV itself includes smart phone, computer, and all sorts of electronic equipment showing moving images. With this definition in mind I would suggest that it is getting very hard to live without television. Not to mention people using smart phone, laptop and others, people who don't have any sorts of these devices can't be freed. Imagine subway which you took in the morning. Do you remember seeing a movie trailer or a notice about approaching subway from screen? How about in streets? Do you remember seeing a music video from TV screen outside convenience store? There is no way to avoid TV unless you live in a cave.

Eun Dana/TV : Could you live without it?/Mon 9am

Televisions have become a big part of our lives nowadays. Many people enjoy watching them during spare time and not just for fun but for getting some information too. I am one of those people who like to watch television at home. What if televisions were taken away and we were to live without it? Could we live without televisions? My answer would be, yes, we can live without televisions but our lives would be so much different and uncomfortable. I used to live without televisions during high school because it was a boarding school and did not have them in dormitories. It sure is inconvenient due to lack of knowledge on social issues and trends. Televisions play an important role of conveying news and information because it has many advantages compared to other social media. It has sound and visual effects which help people to understand the content better. This merit cannot be replaced by any other media such as radio or newspaper. Not only that, televisions give people time to rest and forget about work. We can just sit and enjoy the programs with family or friends and have a good time together. Therefore, I believe televisions should be part of our lives.

A friend and a teacher of mine, TV

Living without TV? I can never imagine my life without it. As both of my parents work, I had to stay at home alone or with my brother since I was a child. So watching TV was one of few things that I could do while waiting my mom to come home. It was like a friend to me. I couldn't talk to it, but I could see people and characters in that box talking to each other. I liked watching it, and it made me feel like I was with them in TV. As I spend lot of time with TV, I learned many things from it. It was also like a teacher to me. I could get various understandings from news and learn how to behave to be a great person from documentaries. Especially from documentaries, it had me make a promise myself to become an admired person like people on the TV.  As I mentioned, for me, TV has been sometimes a friend, and sometimes a teacher. Can you live without a friend and a teacher?  Well, I can't.
