ANYeonju_My favorite piece of music

Vladimir Horowitz died already in the year when I was born, but I know how wonderfully he plays Rachmaninov’s piano concerto No. 3, thanks to the video clip I happen to have. Three years ago, a friend of mine sent me this video clip while we were chatting on the Internet until the dawn. It was a sleepless night that brought worry, sadness, loneliness and all kinds of emotion together. I was sitting alone in my cold room with a blue blanket that I had stolen in the airplane on my knee. The Moscow wind was so wild that I could hear the whirling sound beyond the window and even sometimes I shivered as if I felt the wind on my skin. I clicked the button to download the file named Horrowitz.mp4 and made a cup of black coffee while waiting for it to be loaded. After clicking the play button, I couldn’t take my eyes off of the monitor for next forty minutes. The eighty-year-old pianist starts the concerto cautiously but with confidence. As the music goes on, he runs out of breath. The sound of his short breath becomes a part of the music and it touched my heart so strongly. In the highlight part, he moves his finger as vigorously as the black coffee made my blood run. The rapid changes in passionate melody allowed me to forget anything stressful, confusing, annoying, irritating or sad. Still, sometimes, the scent of black coffee reminds me of magnificent Horowitz’ piano concerto that helps me to overcome the hard time.

  1. Hi I'm Yun you jung. I can feel the same way with you when I heard his playing. His playing give us comfort, I think. What I like about his piece of writing is that you explain the background information about music in detail. I can even know how the weather is like when you listened the music. And your main point seems to be the musice that helps me to overcome the hard time. And, I like the line, "the scent of black coffee reminds me of magnificent Horowitz’ piano concerto", because I can know how impressive this music is to you. But the line "he moves his finger as vigorously as the black coffee made my blood run." isn't clear to me. I can recognize that you try to express the dynamic of his playing through the movement of the black coffee. But this expression seems to have less impression. And I think the description about music itself(not background infromation) is litte bit short. If you add some description about the music, it would be better writing. See you in the next class:-)

  2. Hi YeonJu ! This is SunGyung Kim.

First,I really love your writing because it described the Rachmaninov’s piano concerto No. 3 itself very well. Even though I've never listend to the music, I could lively feel it thanks to your paragraph, especially the latter part. Your main point seems to be the amazing first feeling of listening to Vladimir Horowitz playing Rachmaninov’s piano concerto No. 3. In this paragraph, the most impressive expression for me is these two sentences; 'The sound of his short breath becomes a part of the music and it touched my heart so strongly.' 'In the highlight part, he moves his finger as vigorously as the black coffee made my blood run.' I really loved these because it's so creative and original of you to use such expressions! However, the first sentence is not clear to me and I guess that's because of several gramatical errors and awkward sentence structure. On top of that, I hope you could put some more words picturating senses regarding sight, smell, and touch. This will make your writing even better :) Thank you and see you in class soon !!

  3. Hi. I'm Lee Myungjae.

I was greatly impressed by your detailed descriptive writing. As you pictured your situations when you first listened to his music, and explained how you felt about it, those feelings were just conveyed to me as well. Based on your emotional change after listening to the music, your main point would be that his subtle and magnificent playing makes you feel clam and peaceful. There are several parts that I liked, but in particular, I like the line 'the sound of his short breath becomes a part of the music and it touched my heart so strongly' because I thought the expression is lyrical and poetic. But the part that 'the black coffee made my blood run' is a bit unclear and somewhat awkward. I think I guess right on what you mean, but still it looks unusual to me. Also, I think the first part of the writing has too many detailed information. They just support the main idea as a background, and do not hold some essential points. It is way too long to get to the main point (description on the music itself) I think it would better if you cut some redundant sentences.

Deep wrinkles on this old artist's forehead move with the music, tell his feeling and show his passion to Art. After watching the whole video clip, I feel like I have talked with my best friend who understand me so well, worry for me and consoliate me. Still, the scent of black coffee reminds me of magnificent Horowitz’ piano concerto that helps me to overcome the hard time.
