MinKyong Sohn/Mon1,2/A favorite piece of art

A favorite piece of art: Dance at Bougival

I never liked art class in my high school years. I was not good at drawing or crafting. Learning history of art was not an exception. Every time my teacher tried to lecture us about it, I just couldn't follow. I got lost somewhere between 18th century and 19th. Although I suck at art, I have some great pieces of art on my liking-list. And this picture I'm about to write about, I dare say this is my favorite. "Dance at Bougival" by Auguste Renoir is the picture. Renoir was one of the famous master of impressionism. Impressionists drew how a thing looks like in the very moment. In the middle of this picture, there's a guy and a girl and they are dancing-maybe waltz. The man is on the right side, wearing dark suit and hay-colored fedora. The hat is covering upper half of his face so the viewer can't see his face. He's leaning towards the girl as if he's going to tell her something or to kiss her. His right hand is holding her waist tight and the other hand is holding her hand, not letting her to look away. The girl is looking down with shy smile on her face. She's wearing a white dress but the sunset makes it reddish like her red hat. I love this picture because it really makes feel like I'm in that situation. When you look in the back of the picture you can hear the people chatting and laughing. This picture gives me the impression that one day Renoir was passing by this square and he saw this couple dancing and he just pulled out his paper and drew them. Whenever you are free, please google this picture sometime and you will find it very fascinating too.

  1. Hi! This is Youn Hee from the writing class. I was very catched up by your first sentence. I was a little surprised that you said you never liked art but how could you write about a favorite piece of art.
As I read your paragraph, I couldn't wait to see the picture and I googled it! What a coincidence! In the conclusion you mentioned about googling. :)
Anyway, I liked your writing overall. And I think I should have interest on art too.

So, even if you started your paragraph with a negative sentence, I could know that you will talk about 'art'.
And I could also know how you had the opportunity to learn art.
And I can exactely imagine how the picture looks like. I think you described very well your picture. But I think it should be more well descriptive if you used adjectives to describe the background and I want you to explain more about the impressionist.

    Thank you for your writing.
    See you in class! :)

  2. Hello! I'm Takgyun.
The first sentence was very eye-catching. Though the subject of your writing was your favorite piece of art, you started your paragraph by telling us that you are not good at art, which made me curious about it and read it.
Also, I liked your description of the painting. I had some kind of knowledge of the picture, so it was much easier for me to imagine it, but your explanations were good enough for those who haven't seen the drawing. However, your description was too centered on figures in the picture. It would be much better if you explained more about the backgrounds.
Good paragraph! See you tomorrow :)

"Dance at Bougival" by Auguste Renoir is the picture. Renoir was one of the famous masters of impressionism. Impressionism was an art movement started by French artists in late 19th century. Impressionists drew how a thing looks like in the very moment. They believed that things look different by various factors, such as lights or where you are standing and observing the object. This picture is separated into two parts; the middle and the background. The background gives you a slight hint of where this piece was drawn. People are sitting around the table and chatting, maybe it’s park or outside of a cafeteria. All of their faces are filled with joy. It must be beautiful sunny day which is rare in Europe. If you move your eyes to the center of this drawing, you can see a couple dancing-maybe waltz. The man is on the right side, wearing dark suit and hay-colored fedora. The hat is covering upper half of his face so the viewer can't see his face. He's leaning towards the girl as if he's going to tell her something or to kiss her.
