  A Sense of Place

Whenever I think of a place that's somehow meaningful to me, 'Jeongdok Library' always pops up in my head. This relationship goes back to the times when I was in elementary school. Every month my class visited the library in order to read books and discuss about it. On the way there, there's a pathway links Insa-dong and Samcheong-dong. The path is surrounded by old gray stone walls which used to be a part of outer walls of a palace. Old trees are standing along, casting their branches like a shade. The library is on the end of the pathway near Samcheong-dong. There's a sign in front of it saying that this used to be a high school which has moved to another place. After entering the gate, you can see the front yard. Blossom trees are standing all over the place. If you visit the place around this time of spring you will see the sea of pink blossoms and those petals falling like rain. Benches are placed alongside the path into the library, shaded by wisteria trees. People sit down on it and eat something or chat. It's not only the spring the library shows its beauty. In summer the leaves are all green and shining like emeralds, reflecting the sunlight. The wisteria flowers blooms themselves and give off strong and sweet fragrance that makes you drowsy. In the fall you can see the raining of leaves, there are red and brown all over the place. When the snow covers this place in winter, it's all white and very still, feeling like everything's going to stay in this way. I've been visiting the place to study since my high school years. This place has various beauties from every season and that's I like the most about it.

1, In particular what I like about this piece of writing is your delicate descriptions views when one can see outside of library. And I really your idea of portraying it as season go on. Yeah you are right. Scenery must be different as season go on. I appreciate your idea. It feels like kind of new compared to other writings under this topic.

2, Your main point seems to be view’s from outside of 'Jeongdok Library' not the inside of it right?

3, Words or lines struck me as powerful are followed. ‘sea of pink blossoms and those petals falling like rain’ Wow! I feel you have a gut for English writer. I can make a scene in my mind so vivid. Your usage of word is awesome! In particular I like that you succeeded in getting the words ‘sea’ and ‘rain’ which seems little bit far from flower itself. But by connecting two categories which seems not that closely related you made such a vivid and wonderful image.

4, Some things aren’t clear to me are followed. ‘it's all white and very still’ In this sentence I really failed to catch your intention underlying the word, still. I guess that you may want to describe a situation that things rarely move. Am I right? And actually I feel little bit puzzled because I thought you are going to describe about 'Jeongdok Library' by reading your first sentence. However your majority of wiring is composed of descriptions about pathway to reach the place and mostly on external environment of library. What I mean is that at first I expected that I could find information about library itself. For example how big is library? Whether it is two-story building or not? But since your descriptions on external situation are so wonderful why don’t you add connecting sentence so that readers won’t get confused anymore. For instance if I were you I would make sentence like this. ‘'Jeongdok Library' always pops up in my head because it has wonderful scenery around it. ’ In this manner readers can notice more easily that your paint point is scenery around library rather than library itself.

5, The one change you could make that would make the biggest improvement in this piece of writing is maybe giving some more descriptions using many senses. As far as now your descriptions are mostly related to sight. I think that if you are able to give descriptions based on feeling, smell, sound and even taste your writing would be really great.

By the way I liked your writing very much I could make my own journey to 'Jeongdok Library' while following your expressions. I really enjoyed it. See you in class!

  2. A Sense ofPlace

Whenever I think of a place that's meaningful to me 'Jeongdok Library’ always pops up in my head but not just the library itself but also the road I take whenever I visit the place. This relationship goes back to the times when I was in elementary school. Every month my class visited the library in order to read books and talk about it. On the way there, there's a pathway links Insa-dong and Samcheong-dong. The path is surrounded by old gray stone walls which used to be a part of outer walls of a palace. In the fall you can see the raining of leaves, there are red and brown all over the place. When the snow covers this place in winter, it's all white and very quiet, feeling like everything's going to stay in this way. Besides the beauty this library has, I like this place because I can find everything there. This place has three buildings of at least 4 stories. There are about 10 archives and all the archives are filled with books according to the genre. I've been visiting the place to study since my high school years. This place has various beauties from every season and that's I like the most about it.
