Cho yoon jung / a Sense of Place

a Sense of Place

A sense of place that impressed me is Khaosan road which located in Thailand. Khaosan road is a main street in Bangkok, Thailand. Not only it's a unique city for a capital city of Thailand, but it is a special place to me for other reason; it is a first backpacking place I visited. Whenever I think of the Khaosan, still it reminds me of the thrill and excitement of that journey. Everything was memorable and the every place has come to me in a special way. Khaosan road is a main street in Bangkok, Thailand. But unlike a mainstreet that you can imagine in normal city, Khaosan road is has its unique value. When you stand in the beginning of the road, you'll first meet various kinds of people. Natives, travelers, olds, young people, Asian, European. Different people are talking, laughing, singing and having the day fun. Then when you go down the road, you'll see a lot of food selling. All kinds of traditional Thai food from Phat thai, Egg roll, Roti to tropical fruits. The smell of spicy and sweet food makes you taste them all. The air of Khaosan is hot and humid as there are so many people and so many foods, fires, lights. But I've never felt it irritating. It is always hot but makes me smile and enjoy the night just as itself. Though the place has been changing in every minute since I left, but the memory and feeling I remember of the place will never change.

  1. Hi Yoon Jung ! This is SunGyung Kim and I will comment on your writing from now on.

    1. you have a topic sentence and this let me definately know what you will write about.
    2. Regarding the background information, "Khaosan road is a main street in Bangkok, Thailand. Not only it's a unique city for a capital city of Thailand, but it is a special place to me for other reason; it is a first backpacking place I visited.", I really loved it and think it was effective enough.
    3. Your paragraph includes looks, smells, and feels but it lacks a description of senses such as tastes and sounds. I know that mentioning all these could be difficult, in just one paragraph, but your writing will become strong if you could do this!
    4. you used specific words including spcial, traditional, unique and so forth to descrive the Khaosan road.
    5. You used adjectives like spicy, sweet, humid, hot...etc.
    6. In my opinion, it was quite relevent and used well regarding the topic.
    7. You have a nice concluding sentence which puts your paragraph in a nutshell.

  2. Hi, this is Ji-young from writing class. From your writing, I could imagine the atmosphere of Khaosan road. But I think you would have better writing if you use descriptive words, especially colors. In that way, I would imagine better with sight of traditional Thai foods. And also scent. there could be many words describing that scent of thai food other that sweet and spicy. It will be better writing if you consider these. See you in class, bye ;)

Different people are talking, laughing, singing and having the day fun. All kinds of sound is mixing around the road but it never comes as a noise. It is such a live place. Then when you go down the road, you'll see a lot of food selling. All kinds of traditional Thai food from Phat thai, Egg roll, Roti to tropical fruits. The smell of spicy and sweet food makes you taste them all. Oil smell and the scent of burning woods are also the smell I can remember until now. Since then, when smelling something burning even in Korea, it always reminds me of the place. The air of Khaosan is hot and humid as there are so many people and so many foods, fires, lights. But I've never felt it irritating. It is always hot but makes me smile and enjoy the night just as itself.
